ON FEBRUARY n , 1985—the 138th anniversary of thebirth of Thomas Alva Edison—the editors of the ThomasA. Edison Papers officially announced the publication ofThe Thomas A. Edison Papers: A Selective Microfilm Edition, PartI ( 1850-1878)) the first of a projected six-part edition of the papersof America's most prolific inventor.1 With the publication of thispathbreaking microfilm edition, scholars now have entree into thelaboratory notebooks, correspondence, legal records, and other historicallysignificant papers relating to Edison's early career as aninventor, manufacturer, and entrepreneur.
