摘要

REBECCA WORDEN VAIL was a Quaker farm womanwho died in 1872 and who, for a brief period in her life,kept a diary. The fragment of the diary that remains coversJanuary 30 to July 25, 1847. ^ l s possible that other diaries precededthis one, but it is fairly certain that none followed it. Thepages following her last entry in the yellowed, fragile notebook arefilled with household accounting entries for the next five years. Thisledger-type conclusion to a book intended to hold personal thoughtssomewhat devalues the preceding entries. It is almost as though shelooked back on her six-months journal, found it wanting and decidedto use the remaining pages for more practical and usefulnotations.
