I welcome the invitation to contribute to theforum on the titi project and, more generally, tocomment on the nature of science and on whatare termed traditional knowledge systems. Themain aim of the project, a 14-year collaborationbetween Rakiura Maori and scientists, was toengage Rakiura Maori in the sound managementof the customary harvesting of the seabirds(sooty shearwater, Puffinus griseus)undertheir guardianship. A further aim was to comparescience and matauranga (the Maori versionof traditional ecological knowledge or TEK)‘asways of knowing and guiding ecological management’(Stephenson & Moller 2009:139).With respect to the science aspect of the project,there are, in my opinion, several disturbingaspects deserving of particular comment.
