摘要

The influence of breed and age on the occurence of Gastrointestinal (GI) helminths of pigs in Abia State, Nigeria was investigated in this study. One hundred and seventy-nine (179) apparently healthy pigs of varied ages and breeds from several piggery farms located in the study area were randomly selected for the study. Faecal samples were collected from the rectum of selected animals and subjected to standard parasitological analysis. The results showed that the overall prevalence of infection in the examined pigs in the study area is 30.7%, with 8.9% of the sampled population showing infection with more than one GI helminth parasite. Indigenous pig breeds were observed to show higher (36.6%) infection rates than the Crossbreeds. Infection was also found to be highest (46.7%) in pigs whose age ranges were between 7 to 12 months when compared with pigs in other age groups. Four different parasite species were recorded in the study and they include Ascaris suum, Hyostrongylus rubidus, Trichuris suis and Strongyloides spp. The trend of infection with these specific parasites was similar in both the Indigenous and Crossbred animals and Ascaris suum showed highest occurence in both investigated breeds. In conclusion, further improvement of management practices and adequate veterinary care should be instituted in the study area to reduce economic and production losses caused by subclinical or chronic infection with these GI helminth parasites, as well as prevent the development of parasite resistance to available anthelminthics in order to maximize profitability of pig production ventures.
