During the 2001 anthrax bioterror-ism investigation, several areas wereidentified in which additional researchmay improve public health response.The disciplines and specific expertiserequired to approach many of theseareas are varied and reside in multipleentities in the federal government andelsewhere. To identify, prioritize, andcoordinate short-term Bacillus anthra-cis bioterrorism research for publichealth response, the Centers for Dis-ease Control and Prevention (CDC)convened a meeting in Atlanta onDecember 10–11, 2001, to obtaininput on research priorities andimprove coordination with federalpartners and other stakeholders. Onehundred thirty-two representativesfrom the Department of Health andHuman Services (CDC, Food andDrug Administration, and NationalInstitutes of Health), EnvironmentalProtection Agency, Department ofDefense, Department of Energy,Department of Justice, U.S. PostalService, state health departments, uni-versities, and other organizations par-ticipated in the meeting
