To the Editor: Multidrug-resistant(MDR) Salmonella Typhimuriumdefinitive phage type (DT) 104 withchromosomally encoded resistance toampicillin, chloramphenicol, strepto-mycin/spectinomycin, sulfonamides,and tetracyclines (ACSSpSuT) wasfirst identified and characterized inthe United Kingdom in the early1990s (1). MDR DT104 has subse-quently caused numerous outbreaksthroughout the world (1). The organ-ism is characterized by a distinctiveXba I-generated pulsed-field profile(PFP), designated Xtm 1 (2), carriageof the 90-kb S. Typhimurium serovar-specific plasmid (SSP), and presenceof the 43-kb Salmonella genomicisland 1 (SGI 1), which is composedof integrons containing, respectively,the ASu (blaCARB-2 and sul1) and SSp(aadA2) genes, with intervening plas-mid-derived genes coding for chlo-ramphenicol/florfenicol (cmlA) andtetracycline resistance (tetG) (1,3,4).The same genetic characteristics havebeen observed in MDR strains of theclosely related DTs 12 and 104b (5)and in some strains of phage typeU302 (4). All isolates of MDR DT104ACSSpSuT contain the same genecassettes irrespective of source orcountry of origin. Although MDRDT104 has declined during the last 5years, the organism remains the mostcommon MDR Salmonella in theUnited Kingdom and many otherEuropean countries (6).
