摘要

In my first years as a graduate student, I was deeply immersed in the world of population dynamics.I spent nearly all of my time examining the outcome of species interactions in both math models andreal organisms at scales of meters to centimeters. Vanishingly little of my time was spent lookingup to observe or think about the larger world. Yet it was that big picture of order arising from thecomplexity of nature, repeated patterns in landscapes, species turnover along transects, and crazy ideaslike interglacial migration of trees, that had hooked me on ecology as an undergraduate. As a graduatestudent, however, the jump from a three-species model of intraguild predation to a model of a trophiccascade only required the removal of one feeding link, so I began exploring trophic cascade models andthe associated literature. This led me to Gary Polis’ 1999 Minireview in Oikos, “Why are parts of theworld green? Multiple factors control productivity and the distribution of biomass.”
