Art therapy based on painting therapy on the improvement of autistic children's social interactions in Iran

Autismspectrumdisorders (ASDs)arecharacterized by socialinteraction difficulties,communication challenges,and atendency to engagein repetitive behaviors.However, symptomsand their severity varywidely across thesethreecoreareas. Taken together, theymay result in relativelymild challenges for someone on the highfunctioning end oftheautismspectrum. For others, symptoms may be moresevere,as when repetitive behaviorsand lack ofspoken languageinterfere with everydaylife.[1] About onein 68 children has been identified with anASD. Boysareat higher risk forautism, with nearly onein 42 boys receiving anASDdiagnosis,comparedto onein 189 girls.[2] Funding for the Autismand DevelopmentalDisabilities Monitoring network sites participating in the 2014 surveillance year wasawarded fora 4-yearcyclecovering 2015–2018, duringwhich time data werecollected forchildren aged 8 years during 2014 and 2016.[3] The purpose ofthis studywas toinvestigatetheeffect ofthesimultaneous intervention ofthechild and the mother on the basis of painting techniques on theimprovement ofautisticchildren's socialinteractions in Iran. Thestatistical population ofthis study consisted ofchildrenwith autismbetween theages of 6 and 12 years living inTehran, Iran, during the 2017–2018 educational year. Atotal of 40 children qualified for thestudywereselected using convenientsampling procedureand wereassigned to controland experimentalgroups. The participants ofthis studywereselected based on somecriteria. Participants in both groups had no experiencein participating in painting therapyinterventions. To ensurethat participants had intelligence quotient (IQ) between 50 and 70, IQ test wasadministered.
