Professionals within safety critical domains such as fire rescue services, ambulance, military, intensive care units, police and law enforcement, mining and nuclear sectors are often tasked with managing complex incidents that challenge their very own expertise and decision-making skills. The nature of these work domains is such that decision-makers are required to make sense of, and integrate, multiple informational and environmental cues, often under conditions of uncertainty, high stakes and time-pressure. One notable feature of managing complex crises is the notion that pre-defined solutions rarely exist, hence developing a successful response strategy may sometimes be seen to contradict the standard operational procedures (SOPs) guiding these work domains. Crisis responders are therefore expected to approach complex tasks in more flexible and creative ways. This sort of flexibility and creativity has been regarded as a key feature of intuition (Table 1).
