Innovation in development organizations: an Indian perspective

The factors described above had facilitated innovation in this NGO and many of these factors could also help foster innovation in other development organizations, especially in the Indian context. Figure 1 highlights the key factors uncovered in this case study. When initiating new ideas, it is important that an NGO looks at whether the market, partners, donor agencies, flexibility in policies and technical institutions support the innovation. Any new idea also needs to be accepted by the community and indigenous local practices themselves can be sources for innovation. Leadership support and a learning culture are important internal factors influencing levels of innovation. Moreover, and finally, innovation is not only getting influenced by these factors but also influencing them in turn. The crux is the openness of the development organization to new ideas for enhancing performance.
