Blended learning in higher education (HE): conceptualising key strategic issues within a business school

Similar to higher education (HE) institutions throughout the UK, business students at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) in the South East of England are being introduced to blended learning at an ever increasing pace. Through an internal partnership with the university's Learning and Teaching Enhancement Unit (LTEU), university staff as module coordinators, are teaming up with learning technologists to deliver ever more flexible and innovative ways of managing pedagogy using technologies such as, wikis, discussion boards, WIMBA, podcasts and videoconferencing. In addition, there is a greater emphasis at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in acquiring work related learning skills using on-line media. Most universities including CCCU now use virtual learning environments (VLE's) such as blackboard and are proactively considering new areas for future blended learning strategy development. In this paper, we discuss key issues in relation to the analysis of blended learning as part of a more student centered approach to learning and teaching development within the Business School at CCCU.
