摘要

In the words of Aeschylus, one of the three great ancient Greek tragedians, "wisdom comes along through suffering". So important was this notion in philosophical thought at the time that the phrase was repeated constantly throughout his trilogy The Oresteia. The simple message is that we have to make mistakes in order to learn from them, an idea that all of us are familiar with. But Michael W. Small of Curtin Business School, Australia, asks whether that really has to be the case, especially within a management situation. Small's belief is that wisdom should become part of the syllabus of all business management programs. Rather than focusing entirely on the pragmatic, with modules in human resource (HR) management, international relations and so on, he argues that a more theoretical understanding of wisdom from the outset would put future business managers in a potentially more profitable position.
