While much has been made of NBC's 1,200+ hour, multichannel carriage commitment to next month's Summer Olympics in Athens, almost lost in the hype leading up to the quadrennial sports extravaganza is the peacock network's major push on HD delivery. HD carriage will make its first appearance in the annals of U.S. Summer Olympic TV history, with NBC dedicating about one-third of its entire Athens coverage―some 399 hours―to the format. From Aug. 13-29, NBC will convert 124 affiliates with HD capabilities into an HD-compliant network of 24/7 Olympic carriers.
