Thank you for your article about James Watson's comments on race and intelligence [Blinded by Science, March]. IQ tests have shown themselves to be invalid tools for measuring cognitive ability. In my research using mostly non-word-based tools for measuring cognitive development, Africans do as well as Caucasians and Asians. I do not use the word race except in "human race." James Watson's racist remarks are indefensible. He believes that behavior is controlled by genes. He has also insinuated that genetics, rather than social and economic factors, may be the reason women and blacks are underrepresented among the intellectual elite. Bruno Maddox's attempt to deconstruct what Watson "really meant" by the words "the same as" is a tortured exercise that twists reality into something altogether different.
