摘要

This issue of the Discovery and Innovation comes immediately after the 20th anniversary celebrations in December 2005 of its sponsoring organization, the African Academy of Sciences (AAS). This was indeed an important event that not only signified how far Africa had come in the promotion of science and development but also the critical measures that must be taken if we hope to seek economic parity with the rest of the world. Science and technology (S & T) are keys to this effort and AAS has helped to forge the S & T keys that are necessary for unlocking the doors to sustainable growth. I am proud to note that the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), where I serve as the Executive Director, hosted the meeting that led to the creation of AAS. I am also pleased to note that TWAS was instrumental in nurturing the early growth of AAS and that it has remained a staunch ally and partner of AAS since its inception.
