The ever increasing demands of satisfying the navigational safety imperative and the challenges of complying with the new and evolving environmental legislation, place a high premium on the quality and accessibility of information available to port managers and ships' officers for purposes of effective management and appropriate decision making in the running of day to day port operations. Vandermeulen (1996) has pointed out the need to examine environmental impacts and to investigate monitoring possibilities.
