A scheme by UK southwest coastal port Falmouth to dredge a channel to facilitate cruise ship visits has united its opponents. Supporters say dredging is crucial to a $1.57M port development that will bring hundreds of jobs to the recession-hit region, and that it will cause little environmental damage. In contrast, conservationists say the proposal could devastate the bay, in particular its beds of maerl, a coral-like calcified seaweed that provides habitat for a variety of sea creatures.
