The end of last year saw the Dutch Training Institute of Dredging (TID) organise the second special General Dredging Course for Great Lakes' employees - it's an adapted version of TID's standard general dredging course (GDC), tailor made to GLDD's specifications. TID's Henk van Muijen organises the course and invited DPC to visit while it took place in Kinderdijk. TID is a subsidiary of dredger builder IHC Holland and has its HQ actually within that firm's shipyard, which makes it a uniquely practical venue. But why did GLDD choose the Netherlands? 'During most of its 113 years of existence, Great Lakes trained employees internally,' said GLDD vice-president and international projects manager Kyle Johnson. 'Over the past few years, however, we've realised that due to the tremendous developments in dredging technology, it's now necessary to offer our people supplementary training - preferably by an organisation that's known for its knowledge and experience in modern dredging.'
