The Editorial Board of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics dedicates selected issues of the Journal to special topics. The first Special Issue in this series on Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering, with Professor Thomas Paulay as the Guest Editor, was published in March 2002. This second Special Issue is dedicated to Earthquake Engineering for Transportation Structures. These special issues provide a forum for researchers and practicing professionals to present their work in a publication of related papers on one subject. In recent years, rapid advances have taken place in earthquake engineering as applied to transportation structures (highway bridges, transit and high-speed rail structures, and tunnel linings) with major emphasis given to (1) characterization of expected ground motions, (2) prediction of ground failure conditions, (3) improvements in structural design detailing, (4) better modeling and dynamic analysis procedures, (5) development and use of response modification devices, (6) advancing instrumentation and health monitoring systems, and (7) updating seismic design codes and criteria to reflect newly developed knowledge related to seismic resistant design. In view of these rapid advances, the sharing of knowledge obtained is critical to improving the seismic safety of transportation structures. Thus, it is timely that this Special Issue be devoted to this topic.
