Robert Pringle's collection of short essays describes, with clarity and technical precision, the great debates and conflicts about money that have marked Western civilisation from the nineteenth century to our uncertain days. The author is well qualified for this demanding job, as he was the first chief executive of the Group of 30, an institution comprising selected individuals from the banking and financial community, and the founding editor of Central Banking, a journal which is a 'must read' for anyone interested in monetary institutions worldwide. The Power of Money can be read at two levels: as an enjoyable and instructive history of how societies look at money, and as the author's investigation into the very concept of money and its economic and social relevance. These essays therefore make easy reading, accessible to anyone who has more than a passing interest in money, avoiding the technicalities and the esoteric language of other books on the same topic. At the same time, money is presented in a problematic way, as a metaphor for society's conditions, its material progress, its sense of fairness, its discontent and its hopes. Through this metaphor, the specific worldly vision of the author emerges bolstered by evidence.
