THE chancellor's helicopter swoops in over Kuehlungsborn, a Wilhelmine resort on Germany's Baltic coast. In the beach-front Concert Garden her face, in soft focus, beams down from posters promising "a Germany where we live well and gladly". A local Christian Democrat (CDU) candidate welcomes the chancellor to the stage, exclaiming: "They used to call this holiday weather! Now they call it Angela Merkel weather."
