New passenger-car registrations Many of the world's big car markets grew in 2017. In Brazil and Russia, where the industries have been plagued by economic turmoilin recent years, car sales rebounded. New registrations in the European Union swelled by 3-4%. China, the world's largest car market, saw only moderate growth, as a tax cut which had boosted salesin 2016 began to be phased out. The picture was gloomier in America and Britain. Light-vehiclesales in America recorded theirfirstannualdrop since 2009, as a result of interest-rate rises and a growing inventory of secondhand vehicles. In Britain, new registrations fell by 5.7% because of weakening consumer confidence and uncertainty about potential new charges on diesel vehicles.
