We enjoyed your briefing on discrimination against Asian-Americans, especially in aca-demia ("The model minority is losing its patience", October 3rd). As immigrants from China, we are willing to put in the extra effort to overcome barriers. We are content with that and have been "quiescent", as you say. However, my wife and I feel bitter when looking at the future for our nine-year-old son. He is likely to experience more disappointments in life because of his Chinese heritage, despite being born in America. As far as university admissions are concerned, Asian-Americans are squeezed on two fronts: affirmative action that favours other minority groups, and admissions policies tailored to the descendants of alumni and big donors.
