摘要

Such is the domination of Argentina by Buenos Aires that one study of the country's history is subtitled "A City and a Nation". Keen to find a non-metropolitan perspective on the country's presidential election and its prospects, Bello headed out of the capital. A four-hour ride northwest on a monotonously straight motorway in a bus that, like much in Argentina, had seen better days took him to Rosario, the third-largest city, with 1.3m people. Most big cities in Spanish-speaking America were founded by a conquistador. But Rosario just sprang up, in the mid-19th century. It owes everything to geography; its site is where the railway across the pampa humeda, the rain-fed heart of the world's most bounteous farmland, meets the broad, brown and navigable Parana river.
