Sir - Your special report on biodiversity (September 14th) noted that environmentalism's roots lie in the romantic movement that sprang up in opposition to the industrial revolution, and that greens distrust technological change. That is spot-on. Green activists often cherry-pick data from weak studies, behaving more like politicians than scientists. We need high-yield farming to save land, feed people and eliminate rural poverty in the developing world. Pesticides are required for this. The amount of pesticide residue in our food is too small to be harmful. Today the safety and quality of food in supermarkets is far better than before the era of modern farming.
