NANCY UPTON, an actress, entered an online contest to find an xl fashion model with shots of herself bathing in creamy salad dressing and covering her crotch with a large cherry pie. American Apparel, the clothes shop sponsoring the contest, snootily rejected her. She won a storm of publicity and a shamefaced invi-tation to the firm's headquarters. It is a small sign of a growing trend: clothesmak-ers are paying attention to customers with ample proportions.

While quite a number of English-Japanese dictionaries of business and legal terms have been publishedin Japan, there seem to be very few Japanese-English dictionaries on the market which give clear explanations of thesubtle differences in meaning between the various English equivalents of terms in such specialized fields. Due to alack of clear guidance, Japanese users frequently hesitate over which term to select when writing business letters ordrafting legal documents.
