Anew generation of plug-in hybrid and electric cars such as the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf are about to roll into American car showrooms in droves. The world's carmakers will launch a dozen or so models this year. These might help to reduce greenhouse gases and cut reliance on imported oil while making owners feel righteous about saving the planet (and eventually saving themselves money). But recharging these cars may prove tricky. Few homes are wired to cope and the power drain caused by charging a battery big enough to deliver a decent range will send electricity meters spinning.
