A part from The Economist, Britain's news outfits have lined up to oppose News Corporation's bid to take over British Sky Broadcasting. So it wasn't surprising that, on November 4th, Vince Cable, the business secretary, asked Ofcom, the communications regulator, to scrutinise the deal. He thus set in motion a lengthy and awkward process that might end with a full investigation by the Competition Commission.
