摘要

Why live in a city? For all their problems, the world's urban centres are also dynamic hubs of wealth creation, innovation and artistic and scientific endeavour. Urban policymakers need to get the basics right, such as transport, security, education, healthcare and environment. But they also need to be creative: above all, policymakers must provide the elements that make a city more liveable for citizens. Measuring liveability involves more than measuring standards of living. A new report and survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Liveable cities: Challenges and opportunities for policymakers, commissioned by Philips, shows that urban professionals enjoy their quality of life and are optimistic about the future. But they are generally doubtful that their city's public services and infrastructure will cope with demand in years to come.
