America's new president is a shrewd public speaker. For his election campaign he made relentless use of two buzzwords, "hope" and "change"; by one tally he employed the former term nearly 450 times in speeches delivered on the trail (whereas his rival John McCain did so on only 175 occasions). Optimism helped to get him elected, but his tone changed for the inaugural address this week, in which he emphasised the need for hard work, difficult choices and sacrifice. Hope got three mentions, change just one. Look back at the past century of inaugural addresses and this is perhaps what one would ex-rnpect: in miserable times such as the second world war, or the 1970s recession, presidents neglect the h-word. As our light-hearted chart also shows, in boom years, when things are going well anyway, presidents dare to be sunnier.
