The Federal Reserve said that it would buy up to $300 billion in long-term American treasury bonds and several hundred billions more in mortgage-backed securities in an attempt to see off the threat of deflation. The unanimous decision came at a meeting of the Fed's Open Market Committee on March 18th.rnTurning the pagernA report by the chairman of Britain's Financial Services Authority, Lord Turner, called for sweeping changes to the way in which the financial-services industry is regulated. The report recommended the setting up of an independent European regulatory body. It also proposed measures to curb institutions' ability to take excessive risks, including increases in the amount of capital that banks must hold, as well as limits on their gross leverage ratios.

While quite a number of English-Japanese dictionaries of business and legal terms have been publishedin Japan, there seem to be very few Japanese-English dictionaries on the market which give clear explanations of thesubtle differences in meaning between the various English equivalents of terms in such specialized fields.
