Look at recent reports in the British press, and you would conclude that the country is about to be overwhelmed by swine flu. The number of confirmed cases had climbed to over 9,700 by July 15th, putting Britain among the hardest hit countries in the world. The death toll seems to rise inexorably: 14 people had died carrying the virus, on official figures at mid-week, and tragic tales of young girls and hapless physicians have been splashed across the headlines. One leading expert said the scourge might eventually afflict up to 40% of the population.
