The number of confirmed cases had climbed to over 9,700 by July 15th, putting Britain among the hardest hit countries in the world. The death toll seems to rise inexorably: 14 people had died carrying the virus, on official figures at mid-week, and tragic tales of young girls and hapless physicians have been splashed across the headlines. One leading expert said the scourge might eventually afflict up to 40% of the population.
