摘要

For much of the past two years, the judiciary has been at the centre of political turmoil in Pakistan. It could be again after the decision by the country's Supreme Court to declare Pervez Musharraf's former state of emergency illegal. On July 31st the court's full bench, led by the chief justice, Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, struck down the "provisional constitutional order" of November 3rd, 2007, and declared all decrees based on it unconstitutional. The order had amounted to a second coup by Mr Musharraf, enabling him to rule by decree, sack troublesome judges such as Mr Chaudhry and become president while remaining army chief.
