The new American ambassador to Germany, Philip Murphy, introduced himself to Berliners recently in an Obama-style town-hall meeting at Humboldt University. "The relationship between Germany and America", he declared, "is the most important relationship of the past 6oplus years." That may have been true when the Berlin Wall still stood, just west of where Mr Murphy was bonding with the city's youth. But it stopped being so when the wall fell 20 years ago.
