Consumer prices in America rose by 0.3% in December, to be 4.1% higher than they had been a year earlier. The core measure of prices, which excludes food and energy costs, rose by 0.2% in the month and by 2.4% from December 2006. There are worrying signs that the American consumerisin retreat. Retail sales fell by 0.4% in December, a weaker out-turn than analysts expected. America's trade deficit in goods and services widened from $57.8 billion in Octoberto $63.1 billion in November.
