There was a worrying increase in inflation across the rich world. Consumer prices in America rose by 1.1%in June, leaving them 5% higher than a year earlier. This was the first time that America's headline inflation rate had reached 5% since 1991. In Britain consumer-price inflation rose from 3.3% in May to 3.8% in June, well above the government's target of 2%. The euro area's inflation rate was confirmed at 4%.rnIn America the value of retail sales all but stalled in June, afterthree months of solid increases. Totalsales rose byjust 0.1%. Excluding cars, for which demand has been weak, the value of sales rose by 0.8%. Indus-trialproduction rose by 0.5%in June, lifted partly by the end of a car-workers' strike.rnIndustrial production in the euro area fell by l.9%in May, the biggest one-month decline since December 1992.
