THE end it was a much.larger victory than most had expected.Antonio Villaraigosa stormed through the run-off election to be mayor of Los Angeles,beating the incumbent James Hahn by 59-41%.Mr Villaraigosa is the first Latino mayor of America's(now)second-largest city since Cristobal Aguilar left office in 1872,back when Hollywood was a dusty field.It is not an enviable job.Los Angeles has appalling schools,a troubled police force and the worst traffic in the country-and the mayor has precious little control over any of these things.
