Less than a month before the leaders of Lithe world's eight richest countries gather in Scotland with Africa at the top of their agenda, Thabo Mbeki, South Africa's president, has sent an unequivocal signal that he is serious about rooting out corruption. On June 14th, he told parliament that he had decided to sack his deputy and potential successor, Jacob Zuma, whose future had been under a cloud since his personal financial adviser, Schabir Shaik, was sentenced earlier this month to 15 years behind bars for corruption and fraud.
