There is no democratic dynasty in the world to match that founded by Jawa-harlal Nehru, India's first prime minister. For 39 of the 58 years since independence, one or other of his clan has been in charge-the latest of them being Sonia Gandhi, Italian-born widow of Rajiv Gandhi, who was Nehru's grandson and served as prime minister in the 1980s. Sonia Gandhi leads the Congress party, which heads India's coalition government. Though she renounced the prime minister's job after last year's general election in favour of Manmohan Singh, a 73-year old technocrat, it is she who tugs the reins of government.
