On the surface, the transition went smoothly. Within hours of Yasser Arafat's death, Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Ma-zen) became chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), its first new leader in 35 years. Ahmed Qurei (Abu Alaa), the Palestinian Authority's prime minister, became head of the National Security Council, with a brief to drum order into the fractious police forces. And Rauhi Fattouh, the legislature's speaker, became the PA's interim president, with the sole remit to organise a presidential election, which has been set for January 9th.
