摘要

Does the Bush administration have an unspoken plan to stomp on all the traditions of polite society to force through radical changes in tune with conservative ideology? The question is usually applied to foreign affairs, where the president is routinely criticised for trashing traditional alliances. But it might be applied with equal force to domestic economic policy. As The Economist went to press, the president was set to begin his first trip to Europe and the Middle East since the transatlantic rift yawned wide over Iraq. His audience will find out how far he is willing either to bind up the wounds of that episode, or to twist the knife in further.
