His joint declaration with Bill Clinton, made on Tuesday, that he "applauds the decision by scientists working on the Human Genome Project to release raw fundamental information about the human dna sequence and its variants rapidly into the public domain" endorses a policy that began a mere ten years ago. Ever since the public project (two-thirds of which is paid for by the American taxpayer and one-third by the Wellcome Trust, a British charity) started the task of unravelling the 3 billion or so chemical base pairs that make up the genetic "letters" of human dna, the scientists involved have made their discoveries available as quickly as possible.
