Superconductors offer no resistance to the passage of electrons, and so do not waste any energy moving electricity around. Traditional superconductors are made of alloys of metals such as niobium, but these work only at temperatures close to absolute zero (-273℃). A more recent generation of superconductors is based on oxides of copper mixed with such exotic elements as barium and yttrium.
