Yes, I get it! We do need government on all levels: National, state, county and municipal. Government provides the structure for society and the rule of law. Without effective government, there is anarchy. If you want to see what that's like look at Lebanon or Somalia. However, the ever-expanding role of government in controlling our lives is disturbing and has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Paul Romer, a Stanford economist, offered government managers an unusual view of emergencies and crises. As Romer said, "A crisis is a terrible thing to waste." While he meant this statement in a positive manner, imploring officials to take bold action on unaddressed issues, I fear a far more sinister outcome. So, this Rant will give some examples of our diminishing freedoms that have resulted from both executive orders, legislative overreach and even an unholy alliance. But first let's examine two terms that characterize the diminution of our freedom: Totalitarian [toh-tal-i-tair-ee-uhn] (Adjective): Exercising control over the freedom, will, or thought of others.
