For me, the whole field of managing people boils down to understanding and mastering three basic objectives: 1. Being clear about the goal or expectation 2. Creating an environment where the person's opportunity for successful completion of any task is optimized 3. Reducing or eliminating all ambiguities about a person's ability or willingness to do a job Like going on a diet, though, making this happen is simple to describe but not necessarily easy to accomplish. I mean, it's pretty simple to grasp that eating a can of tuna fish with some celery stalks (no mayo, no bread) will help you lose weight. But it's certainly not easy to do.
