Ever since my first days in the EDM industry, I have longed for a "soup to nuts" plant tour of a major EDM manufacturing facility. Recently, just such an opportunity arose and I grabbed for the brass ring. Sodick, the world's largest EDM manufacturer, graciously invited me for a "no holds barred" tour of their Thailand manufacturing facilities. Sodick manufactures EDM's in three countries: Japan, Thailand, and China. This diversity of manufacturing locations minimizes the risks of natural disasters, currency valuation, and geo-political instability. As you will soon learn, this strategy proved to be very far sighted. This particular tour offered me, and consequently our readers, an unparallel opportunity to view the manufacturing process for high technology EDM machines. Being the world's largest EDM manufacturer gives Sodick the critical mass to produce an industry leading 80+% of the content of its machines in house. The only major components purchased by Sodick are the THK linear guides, Heidenhain scales, pumps, and the computer monitor.
