摘要

For a long time, I have dreamed about what automated manufacturing would be like. As a diemaker trained at the end of the split & grind era, I experienced the first glimpse of automated manufacturing in the form of the introduction of Wire EDM in the seventies. It was quite miraculous to be able to generate any 2D shape you could define with just a computer program and a spool of wire. The revolution had begun. Next came five axis 3D machining which brought the 2D automation of Wire EDM into the 3D world. Yet, despite these seeming miraculous advances, we were a long way from both the flexibility and autonomy of truly automated manufacturing. Blocks still had to be made, practical geometry limitations abounded, and numerous secondary operations needed to be performed before arriving at a finished, usable part. In 1986, that dream took a gigantic leap forward with the introduction of the first Additive Manufacturing process.
