[Editor's Note: A gage block set is one of a shop's fundamental standards of measurement. In fact, a shop's gage block set is likely the only set of measurement standards that is directly traceable to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology, formerly the National Bureau of Standards). Even though gage blocks are manufactured to tolerances in the millionths of an inch, surprisingly, few people know the proper procedures for accurately wringing blocks together to form a stack. This Quality Corner article is the first in a short series of articles concerning gage blocks. We present this information courtesy of the Webber Gage Block Division, Starrett Corporation, a leading supplier of metrology equipment.]
