The purpose of this article is to present a dynamic programming recursive approach for the emission constrained economic dispatch (ECED). A multiobjective, multistage decision making problem has been solved analytically without the familiar Lambda (?) iteration method. The optimization algorithm has been developed with a sequential dynamic programming model. The salient feature of this technique is that all the former conventional procedures have been avoided completely. This method has boundless applications for economic generation studies with different constraints. An accurate solution is made available on par with other conventional results. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated with the help of two standard test systems.
