This study proposes an application of the half-wave dipole-antenna theory and electrostatic capacitance to detect disconnected locations of down conductors in wind turbine blades. With the help of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, simulation models of the down conductors were employed to calculate the current distributions and capacitance values along the down conductors while changing their disconnected locations. In both techniques, down conductors were simulated by a computer software using the manufacturer's data; these were used to detect the disconnected locations at varying lengths along the conductor. The simulation results were used to obtain trend curves. To evaluate the performances of the proposed techniques, experiments were conducted using a reduced-scale model and a small 400 kW wind turbine. A comparison of the simulation and experimental results showed that the proposed techniques exhibit good performance in the detection of disconnected locations.
